I think there are so many cute sewing patterns out there for little girls. I know my son was beginning to feel a little left out. So when I saw this awesome pattern from Kitschy Coo Kids I just had to get it! She has a lot of awesome kids patterns in her shop, so I’m planning on getting some more of them soon. The thing I liked best about this sewing pattern is that you can combine a woven and a knit, which is what I did! This hoodie is totally reversible. My son was super-excited about the exterior fabric!
Fabric – I made the size 5T, which called for 1-1/2 yard of the interior and exterior fabrics, but I managed to cram all the pattern pieces onto 1 yard. The exterior fabric is a woven Spiderman, and the interior is red fleece that I got at Joann’s on Black Friday for $2.99. I also used a red ribbed fabric for the cuffs and the hem. A bright red zipper finishes it off.
Pattern Pieces – This sewing pattern comes as a .pdf, my favorite kind. The pattern pieces printed out on over 30 pages, which is okay with me because my printer is always set to fast print/gray scale. I had no problem assembling the 4 pattern pieces from what printed out. Everything cuts on the fold except for the hood.
Illustrations/Instructions – This is a very easy pattern to follow. It’s written with a long enough explanation to understand what you have to do, and there are many pictures for each step.
I took my almost-finished hoodie (I just needed to finish the cuffs and install the zipper) to my grandmother’s house yesterday to show her what I was working on. She couldn’t figure out how the sleeves were going to finish up; since it’s reversible, there are no exposed seems. I told her I’d show her how I did it because she was stumped. I have to say, the design of how to get the sleeve cuffs to finish is GEN-IUS. Genius. I had to read over the instructions a couple times for that part, but it really was easy to do. Challenging to sew over the several layers, but the cuff was not hard.
I also wanted to note that when I cut my fabrics out initially, the designer had suggested since I was using a woven and the stretchy fleece, to either use a bigger seam allowance for the fleece or to cut it slightly smaller. I cut my fleece about 1/4″ down on all sides, which seemed to work in my case (although it’s not exactly a 4-way stretch, so next time I will probably pay attention to that when cutting down the sides).
This is a great, fun pattern to sew…the designer really knows her way around garment design and construction.
Conclusion – I can’t say enough good things about this sewing pattern. My son wants more hoodies (I found some Transformers fabric), and I guess I will make one for my daughter as well (even though she doesn’t wear the clothes I made her anymore). This was a 2-night project for me; I sew when my kids go to sleep, so about 9pm-12am. I had fun hammering it out. A very ambitious beginner could probably make this pattern, since besides the zipper it doesn’t require any special techniques, but I would say an intermediate sewer would be able to complete it no problem.
P.S. I link up my weekly finish every Friday on Amy Lou Who’s Sew and Tell Friday! Stop over and take a look at the other projects!
This turned out so well! I love the fabric, and if I were a 5 year old boy, I would think you’re the best. mom. EVER! It is super cute!
awesome! I’ve been wondering if my little guy will start feeling left out at some point. Dresses and skirts are so fun and easy though!
Love it! Will definitely be checking out the other patterns available in the shop!
I LOVE it! I wish my son was still young enough so I could attempt to make this. Super talented!
Wow! That is so amazing!! I love the pattern & its so great that your son gets to benefit. I think mine feels a little left out, too. At 15 I don’t think he’ll let me make any clothes for him, tho! :O
Absolutely fabulous! This looks store bought! I will check out that pattern since there are no exposed seams. Genius is right!
Woah! Super cool! What a lucky son you have!
That looks fantastic! My son would love this!
Super Cute!
BAM! POW! Cute jacket. Yes the boys do seem to get the bum rap on our sewing. This jacket should make up for some of it.
I have four boys and find it difficult to find fabric that I like for them. This is great fabric. I love how your jacket turned out. Great job!
Absolutely adorable! I can’t imagine any young boy who wouldn’t think this was awesome. 🙂
You did a great job! Thanks for such a positive review 🙂
Wow! You American’s have all the great fabric, very jealous. I made something similar for my 5 year old boy in ‘army’ fleece which he loves!
