Kitchen Stitches – My Potholders

Last month, Kitchen Stitches was published, a lovely book full of quick and easy projects that you can make for your kitchen. I was driving around the other day, thinking about what I could write for my review of this book. I think the best reason to have this book would not be to spruce up your own kitchen (although it is certainly lovely for that!), but to have on hand for gift-giving, because I can see just about any one of these projects being a great gift for a friend or family member at any number of holidays, for a party or dinner you’ve been invited to, etc.!

There are 17 projects in the book, shown in the photo above, written by some of your favorite bloggers.

As a bag maker, the project above immediately drew my eye. This is a coupon carrier, and I appreciate all the sweet details on the pockets, etc. I think I will probably make this with my little girl soon…she’s 5 and always wanting to sew a new bag. I have not been able to explain to her well-enough that my bags are not appropriate skill level for little girls! But I think we will be able to do this one together, and this project is absolutely darling.

My friend Kim designed these potholders (two different kinds) and dish towels for the book. I’ve heard that they will be coming to live at my house (why else would she use Echino and Melody Miller on them? ha!). Aren’t they cute? They’re very easy and extremely functional, as they have insulated fleece on the inside, to keep your hands protected! The instructions were very easy to understand.

I made 8 sets of these for Christmas gifts in December using V. and Co. Color Me Happy, and I paired that with a fun text print for the binding. I did a bit of free motion quilting on them, which is kind of cute. The first pair I made weren’t quilted, but I had a hard time making them stay flat after the binding had been sewn on (user error). The quilted ones are quite firm and beautiful. I was happy to give them as gifts to family members and to one of my neighbors.

So pick up Kitchen Stitches, it’s a lovely book! I think these are projects that anyone can do!

  3. I need some new pot holders, will see if the book is available when I go to JoAnne’s this week! Beautiful work my friend, love the freshness!

  4. Thanks for the review. I have been thinking about getting this book specifically for Kim’s projects. I’m glad to know that the pot holders really do need the quilting. I’m sure you’ve saved me from that mistake myself. And what a great way to practice my free motion quilting technique! I’ll definitely have to pick up this book now.

These sorts of things really make a kitchen! And they tend to last forever, worn to little bits. As they should be.
