GIVEAWAY and Book Review: New Crewel

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is #154 Ramona!

I had the pleasure to get a chance to review New Crewel: The Motif Collection by Katherine Shaughnessy. I only have a couple of embroidery projects under my belt, so I was completely unaware of what exactly was involved in creating crewel works of art. I saw that it was a form of embroidery, and I figured ‘phssaw!’ But crewel is so completely different and stunning, I had no idea!

If you’re unfamiliar like I was, crewel is a technique that uses wool that is very strong and comes in 1-ply or 2-ply yarn. Some of the same stitches that I’ve used in embroidery projects are the same as used in crewel embroidery.

The book contains many templates, such as in the photo above with the embroidery hoops on the wall. The nice thing about it is that it is also accompanied by a cd containing all the templates, so you can print and resize them if you wish.

Even if you are new to crewel, you will be able to complete your first crewel project using the helpful initial chapters, which take you through instructions and illustrations of the basic stitches, as well as supplies and other techniques used to complete a crewel project. The following chapters contain all the templates, and there are also projects in the book that will let you utilize these templates. Some beautiful stuff!!

Besides finding copies of New Crewel on their site, the publisher, Lark Crafts, also has an online (free!) version of this beautiful aqua wrap-around skirt. You can find the download right here! How cool!!

If you like what you see, please enter my giveaway for a copy of New Crewel! Click the link below to take you to the entry page! The giveaway will close on Wednesday, June 20th at 7pm CT. Good luck!!

I’m sure it’s bad luck to leave the first comment….but I love to embroider and have been looking for a new project. This book appears to be the perfect place to find that project! Hope #1 is lucky today!

Your embroidery is so beautiful that I am inspired to start embroidering again. Your book would be just the thing I need to get me started. I can think of all kinds of things I would like to embroider for my home and grandchildren. Thanks for offering this give away.
