Beflowered Quilt

I was given the immense pleasure to test this quilt pattern for Amanda Murphy. She has a ton of quilt patterns out (I previously tested the Garden Paths Quilt and the beginnings of the Blossom Quilt Pattern, as well as making these placemats and napkins from the free tutorial on her blog). So yes, I’m a big fan. 🙂 She is also a fabric designer for Robert Kaufman…she has 3 lines: Ambrosia, Swiss Chocolate, and Veranda.

You can see more photos of Amanda’s quilt pattern, and of the quilt that she made for the cover, right here. Her patterns are also available for purchase – there are so many to choose from!! You really should pop over and take a look.

I finished my quilt top in time, but I did not have time to quilt it (although the 3 layers have been spray basted together!). Well, I suppose I could have, if I ignored my children and stayed up all night, lol. 😉 I’m also super-happy to finish the quilt top and show it off for the Bloggers’ Quilt Festival at Amy’s Creative Side! This is my 3rd time in the festival, and it’s always really inspiring to look at all the other quilts!

The pattern is wonderfully written. I decided to go with a black pin-dot fabric for the flowers. The black pin-dot is from Joann’s, and it feels slightly starched to the touch, which made it great for the applique. The pattern calls for fusible web and stabilizer for the applique portion. If you know me, you know I’m ever-thrifty when it comes to my sewing, so instead of using either of these, I used a glue stick to adhere my flowers to the solid-colored background fabrics. I wouldn’t recommend these changes for everyone, but I would definitely try testing it out first! Who knows! And I also used 2 layers of the yellow fabrics, since with just 1 layer I could slightly see the black fabric behind the yellow (again, insert glue stick here). I  used a blanket stitch for the applique at the recommendation of Kim, which I was super happy about.

A lot of triangle cutting went into this project. A lot of prep went into this quilt (lots of cutting, applique, trimming, pressing, etc.), but the results are TOTALLY worth it. I’m very happy with the solid colors that I chose, too. This is just a beautifully-designed quilt pattern, and I don’t think you can go wrong with whatever colors you choose.

On a rainy day, my kids even helped me lay out the quilt…they really did! I gave my son the piles of dark triangles, and my daughter the light ones, and they took turns assembling each ‘block’. Aren’t they great…they also helped me match up the Kona solids at Joann’s when I ran out (which they love doing).

Thanks to Amanda for letting me continue to test for her…I hope I did your pattern justice!

Edit: Finally quilted, just in time for Christmas 2011!

This is a *darling* quilt. When I first pulled up the post, though, I completely…and I mean _completely_ misread the title (and name of the quilt). It certainly caused me to raise an eyebrow. LOL! Gracious — I need to lay off the aspartame or something…it’s causing temporary dyslexia! 🙂

love amanda’s new pattern, and your top is just great. love your different flowers and how they’re put together. amanda’s flowers look like they’re appliqued in one piece after the block is made.
