Buttercup Bag

I finally got around to making the Buttercup Bag free sewing pattern from Made by Rae. This bag is everywhere, let me tell you. Not a month goes by where I don’t see that someone in blogland has made a new Buttercup Bag! It’s so great that this pattern is available as a free tutorial. The other day, my husband told me that our daughter needed a ‘mini-me’ purse, and I had exactly the pattern in mind to use for her bag.

Fabric – All you need to make this bag is a fat quarter of fabric, and a little extra for the interior. I used some purple Hello Kitty fabric, and then another small scrap of Hello Kitty that I had left over from when I made my daughter a hoodie. The pattern doesn’t call for any interfacing, but I am a creature of habit, so I used fusible fleece on the strap and interior, and woven interfacing for the rest. You also need a magnetic snap.

Pattern Pieces – There are only 3 pattern pieces; one for the outside, one for the inside, and one for the strip at the top of the bag. There are markings on the pattern piece to help you make the pleats.

Illustrations/Instructions – This pattern is really easy to work through, and perfect for a beginner. I’ve made a few bags before, so I kind of suspected how the steps would fall, but it’s still nice to be able to have something to glance at. There’s not too much to say about this pattern, it’s all straight-forward and pretty simple. I was able to finish it out in exactly 2 hours, from cutting to finish.

I’m particular where snaps go sometimes, so I put the snaps in just about at the end (when I still had an opening to stick my hand in through the interior, before I sewed the hole closed). Also, I feel like if you don’t use any interfacing at all, your fabric might be a little too thin to support the stress from the magnetic snap. But these are minor details that you can decide about yourself. The pattern calls for the straps to be sewn on the outside of the bag when you’re all done, but I wasn’t sure how nice I’d be able to make that look, so I just sewed them so that the raw edges of the strap were enclosed inside the bag. There is an optional detail at the top of the bag that you can sew on, which looks nice with some buttons, but I left that off because the fabric at the top of my bag has little Hello Kitties on it that I didn’t want to be covered up.

Conclusion – My daughter (she’s almost 3) was ecstatic when she saw this bag upon waking up in the morning. She loves Hello Kitty. She asked what make-up she could put inside, and mentioned that she needed a phone and wallet and camera to put inside. lol. This bag is the perfect size for a child, but if you fancy an adult-sized bag (it is incredibly cute), Rae recommends you increase the size to 130%.  Great project for a beginner, or if you need a quick gift for a little girl (or a girl at heart).

Sara, what a little doll with her new purse! I like the buttercup bag, but having made it several times, there are definitely things I want to change the next time I make it. First, I think I’m going to blow up the pattern to make it a little bigger. I, too, interfaced my straps and the lining. I’m thinking a zipper on the top would be better than the magnetic strap (at least for the amount of crap I carry around with me). But for a 3 year old? Perfection 🙂

  12. Love the hello kitty! I made a buttercup bag for my daughter too…wish I’d used interfacing. That was smart of you.

Very cute! And let me tell you, that Hello Kitty fabric is apparently a hot item. I have tried to find some for a friend’s little girl and the fabric store told me it sells out as soon as it comes in! I have 3 boys so I haven’t had a need for it before now!

This bag is really cute and also on my to-do list. I was actually thinking of making my niece a purse for a (belated) birthday gift, and I think this would work. My niece is also the type of little girl that would love having a new purse.
