Mod Mosaic Quilt Block

This is my March block for the Modern Stash Quilting Bee. The host, Pam, wanted a block done using the Mod Mosaic Pillow tutorial on Oh Fransson!, trimmed in white and using bright-colored scraps. The block ended up being 12.5″ x 12.5″.

I waited until actually too late to do my block, so I was able to read the other comments from the other bee members. The general consensus was to use larger scraps on the outsides (I ended up using all large scraps) in order to make the white strips work out, and to lay your scraps out beforehand and proceed in a thoughtful way, as opposed to just picking things and sewing them together one at a time.

I feel like having a plan in mind was the most important part of making this block work out (without a lot of headache). I started by taking my scraps and squaring them out (well, at least evening the edges off), then laying them out so that they more or less fit together. I only cut a couple of the edges on a slant. I don’t know why, I guess I wasn’t being very adventurous, being that I was late already.

Hope Pam like her block. 🙂

This is definitely one of my absolute favorite block patterns, and yours turned out great! Definitely a good idea to lay things out ahead of time to avoid headaches trying to get everything to fit together. That’s not something I would have thought of though, sadly, I would have just started randomly sewing pieces together! 😉

Lovely block, can just any average Joe off the net sign up to do them? I think I may like to try that :o)

  3. I love it Sara!
I’ve been wanting to try this tutorial, too, so it’s nice to have some pointers on how to make it work out.
